Faire l'amour (Marie Madelaine Marguerite de Montalte #1)
I loved the book's second half and a wonderful scene in a hotel swimming pool early on, but felt frustrated by the basic premise that the lead is carrying around hydrochloric acid with random, violent intention. It felt like an artificial way to add suspense when Toussaint's writing is more than enough to carry us through. Certainly worth reading (the character of Bernard is a masterclass in understatement), but a bit more restraint would have made it special.
A nejspíš i černobílej.
The last excruciating days of a love story. When there is still love, or rather its inertia, but being together has become unbearable. When a kiss, once a simple fact, has become impossible, soured by the deceptions and fights, and making love a battlefield where the last strengths are burnt, in self immolation A universal story, chiseled in fine French. Highly recommended

A man and his girlfriend Marie travel to Japan - their love tearing them apart at this seams - to break up. Ok, this is why, despite living in France and being perfectly bilingual, I rarely read books in French. This book is literally everything I hate about contemporary French literature: navel gazing, pretentious and in love with the melodrama of the everyday. I hate the way the main character's girlfriend is always crying (and this is what he's attracted to about her), the way he never says
Although this book contains no illustrations, it was visually stunning. The author relates the break-up of his relationship with a woman over the course of several days spent in Japan. Minutely detailed activities, thoughts, impressions are related as they happen, whether they put the author in an unflattering light or not. The book starts with the protagonist volunteering the information that he has been carrying a small vial of hydrochloric acid with him. The reader senses the temptation to

Description During Books Faire l'amour (Marie Madelaine Marguerite de Montalte #1)
Quick, evocative travelogue that kicks off Toussaint's Marie tetralogy. I read Running Away out of order (not knowing that it was part of a series, vexingly) and preferred it - more mature, less melodramatic, more sense of wonder - but curiously enough, I believe this book comes chronologically second anyway. It's a lingering examination of the last days of a relationship, with almost no exposition (save for a flashback to one telling, touchingly repeated gesture), all of it set in Japan.I loved the book's second half and a wonderful scene in a hotel swimming pool early on, but felt frustrated by the basic premise that the lead is carrying around hydrochloric acid with random, violent intention. A remarkably stark and strange book about the end (and beginning) of a relationship. There is a great deal of beautiful prose here. There is also much left unsaid, much to unpack. Toussaint is not a minimalist, exactly, but relies on spareness even as he fills certain moments with rich details. His development of the landscape of Tokyo and Kyoto is brilliant.
