This story was equally beautiful as it was ugly and I really loved that. And as always with magical realism, the little details stay with you. To read this lyrical Spanish tale of cursed women while laying in the grass was seriously perfect! :)

Clara Laguna comes from a long line of strong women. However it is been said that the Laguna women are cursed. Every time a Laguna woman falls in love with a man, her heart is broken. Oh and did I mention that the women have only given birth to girls. Clara falls for a rich man, who gets her pregnant and leaves her. Clara vows revenge. She gives birth to a daughter. I was drawn to THE HOUSE OF IMPOSSIBLE LOVES by the compelling title and synopsis and, while the prose was gorgeous and the plot unique, I just wasn't hooked by this novel.The story tells about multiple generations of women from a family that has been cursed. It is said that the women in this family will never experience happy love and will forever end up alone. Quickly, an issue arose that I found hard to overlook: I felt no connection - neither sympathy or anger - towards the women of the

I loved the characters and the settings. So realistic and lifelike. You can tell the author knew exactly what she was writing about. My only problem with this book is that it lags in some places. It just doesn't keep you engaged 100%...but only like 90%. That's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. But I'd still recommend it to others.

4.5 starsWoah, this book was Weird (with a capital "W"), but SO good! I'd like to visit Scarlet Manor's garden, but at the same time I'd be a little wary. I absolutely love the author's writing. It's so vivid and paints such an interesting picture. Though her characters were incredibly unique, I connected with a lot of them and I really cared what happened to them.I love magical realism, and this book has a ton of that, so that was a wonderful treat. I highly recommend this one!

2.5 So I picked this book up and started reading, first chapter was completely entranced by the story and the magical realism it contained. A novel about women in the family, a family curse stating that the women would always bear a daughter and be unlucky and unmarried in love. So first, mother, first daughter Clara, has a daughter Manuela, Clara plots revenge on her lover, and turns the gift he gave her of a house into a bordello. Always the scourge of the town, now the town really looks down

As someone who loves some good magical realism (Allende, Garcia Marquez) I was fascinated by the plot. The characters are unique and intense. The first half was better, but it still keeps you interested all the way until the end. Quite a poetic writing. 4 Stars, I recommend it!
